Marbella is the easiest place in Spain to marry, and one of the easiest to get wrong.
The easy part is logistics. It sits about forty minutes from Málaga airport, so guests can land at lunchtime and be at your welcome drinks by six. There are more venues within half an hour of each other here than anywhere else on this coast, and they cover almost every style a couple could want.
What catches people out is that those venues operate very differently from one another, and the differences rarely show up in photographs.
Where in Marbella, and why it matters
Marbella is not one place. The stretch between the town and Puerto Banús, the Golden Mile, is where the five-star hotels sit, with beachfront terraces and the shortest walk from room to ceremony. Puerto Banús itself gives you the marina and the nightlife, which suits couples who want the party to continue somewhere afterwards. Behind it, Nueva Andalucía and the golf valley are full of private villas with space and pools.
Climb a little and Sierra Blanca and Nagüeles give you hillside villas with the whole bay below you, which is spectacular and worth knowing costs you a winding drive for older guests and usually a shuttle. East towards Elviria and Los Monteros the beaches are quieter and the pace drops. The Old Town, around Plaza de los Naranjos, has boutique hotels and cobbled streets that photograph beautifully, though access for suppliers can be tight.
Then there is inland. Twenty minutes towards Ojén, Monda or Istán and you are among old fincas and cortijos, where it runs a few degrees cooler in August, the evening light is better, and the money generally goes further. Worth saying plainly: several venues marketed as Marbella are actually in these villages. That is not a problem, but your guests will be booking taxis, so it is better to know.
Getting the timing right
Marbella weddings run later than couples expect, and there is a reason for it. Aim to say your vows about two and a half hours before sunset. That gives you the ceremony, drinks and photographs in falling light, with golden hour landing between the reception and dinner.
In practice that means a ceremony around seven in the evening in June, half five in September, five o’clock in October, and as early as half two in December. Sunset here moves by nearly four hours across the year, so the timing that works in October is wrong in both June and December.
One thing worth planning for: the evening drop. A May wedding reads as 23°C and feels closer to 15°C by the time the speeches finish. Between October and May, outdoor heaters and a basket of blankets make more difference than most couples expect.

How much does a wedding in Marbella actually cost?
Most weddings we plan here land between €25,000 and €45,000 for around 100 guests, and the spread has less to do with how beautiful a venue is than with how it operates.
Venue hire alone runs from about €5,500 for a dry hire finca to €20,000 or more for an all-inclusive coastal hotel. The dry hire figure looks like the bargain and often is not, because everything that fills the site is yours to arrange: catering at roughly €90 per head, furniture, glassware and linen at around €30 per head, plus staff, florals and entertainment on top.
Two costs couples consistently forget. IVA is 21% in Spain and is frequently quoted separately, so €12,000 of venue hire can become €14,520. And a marquee, if your guest list outgrows the covered space, starts around €2,500 and is almost never included.
As a rule of thumb, venue hire accounts for roughly 40% of the total. If a venue is stretching you before you have thought about food, it is the wrong venue.

When is the best time of year to get married in Marbella?
Late spring and early autumn, so May to June and September to early October. Warm and dry without the August heat, and far more comfortable for guests.
But the usual advice hides the figure that matters more, which is what happens after sunset.

Can we get married on a beach in Marbella?
Sometimes, and it is harder than it looks.
Spanish beaches are public domain under the Ley de Costas, which means they cannot be booked out. Holding a private event on public sand requires an occupation permit from the town hall, usually alongside the regional coastal authority, with a fee based on the square metres you use.
Three things couples do not expect. You cannot have the beach to yourself, since a permit gives you a marked area rather than an empty beach, and in high season you will have sunbathers a few metres away. The permit can be withdrawn, because these authorisations are granted on a precarious basis and can be pulled weeks beforehand if the bathing-season plan needs the space. And many municipalities refuse beach weddings across July and August entirely.
Public beaches are also rarely approved for a legally binding civil ceremony, so a beach wedding here is almost always symbolic in any case.
What we usually suggest instead is a beach club or seafront venue with a private terrace. You get the sea, the sand and the sunset, with proper facilities for your guests and no permit risk.
Which part of Marbella should we choose?

How far is Marbella from the airport?
Málaga is about 50km away, roughly 40 to 45 minutes by road. It handles close to 12 million passengers a year with flights from 60 countries, so most of your guests will find a direct flight, and that short transfer is one of the reasons Marbella works so well as a destination.
There are two roads. The free A-7 coastal route and the AP-7 toll road, which costs around €8.90 in high season but is considerably faster and rarely gets congested. In July and August the A-7 can add half an hour, so it is worth telling guests to take the toll road, and worth specifying it when you book transfers.
A taxi from the official rank runs €80 to €100 depending on the meter, time of day and traffic. Pre-booked private transfers are usually fixed at around €72. There is also an hourly Avanza bus from the airport to Marbella bus station, about 40 minutes, at roughly €7 to €11.
Gibraltar is the second option, around 75km and about an hour and fifteen, and often cheaper for guests flying from Ireland or UK regional airports. One thing to warn people about: the land border queues badly between 08:00 and 09:30 and again between 17:00 and 18:30, so avoid landing in those windows if you can.
Further afield, Jerez is 172km and two and a half to three hours, and Granada is 169km and around two hours. Both are worth checking if Málaga fares spike around your date.
For the wedding day itself we almost always recommend coaches rather than leaving guests to arrange their own transport. Two coaches for 100 guests typically comes to around €700, and it means everyone arrives together rather than trickling in across forty minutes and delaying your ceremony.
Where will our guests stay?
Almost all of them within fifteen minutes of your venue, if we plan it properly.
The practical approach is to offer three options at different price points rather than one hotel, so nobody has to choose between attending and overspending. In Marbella that usually looks like a four-star near the centre, a mid-range option with beach access, and one apartment or villa complex for families who want space and a kitchen.
Group rates are worth asking for above roughly ten rooms, and they are easier to secure outside July and August. We handle those conversations, along with the shuttle timings between the hotels and the venue.
Where you base people matters as much as the price. Guests staying in the Old Town can walk to dinner and back, which suits couples who want everyone in the same square each evening. The Golden Mile and Puerto Banús give more resort facilities and a longer walk. Guests staying inland near a finca will need a taxi for everything, which is fine if they have hired a car and awkward if they have not.
Marbella’s five-star names, the Marbella Club and Puente Romano, sit on the Golden Mile and are genuine institutions here rather than recent arrivals. There is also plenty at the other end, including family-run hostales near the centre, which is worth telling guests who assume Marbella means expensive.
Some venues have rooms of their own. Castillo de Monda sleeps 72 and Obal Urban Hotel sleeps 200, which changes the whole logistics picture. Several of our beach and estate venues have none at all.
What is there for our guests to do?
More than they will have time for, and the question worth asking is what suits which day.
Before the wedding. Guests arrive at different times, so something informal works better than a fixed plan. Tapas around Plaza de los Naranjos in the Old Town is the reliable one: everyone can drift in, it costs little, and it works for all ages. The seafront promenade runs about seven kilometres from Marbella to Puerto Banús, flat the whole way, which is a pleasant walk for anyone and manageable for guests who are less mobile.
The day after. Plan for low energy. A beachfront chiringuito lunch or a beach club with sunbeds is usually all anyone wants. Anything requiring an early start or a long drive will be poorly attended, whatever people said the night before.
For guests with a spare day. Ronda is about an hour inland, with the gorge and the bridge, and it is the trip most people are glad they made. Gibraltar is a similar distance if anyone fancies the Rock. Mijas Pueblo is closer and easier at around forty minutes. There are golf courses across Nueva Andalucía and the valley behind Puerto Banús, which suits a group who want a morning out.
Two honest notes. La Concha, the mountain above the town, is a genuine hike rather than a stroll and takes most of a day, so recommend it selectively. And Puerto Banús is worth an evening for the marina and the boats, though guests expecting bargain shopping should be told otherwise.
